The Illinois River

1 Aug

As the sun rose, so did we…

…after all, we had a long way to go – a total of 79 miles (which pretty much exhausted those gerbils down in the engine room).

With the current of the river at our back, we even occasionally topped out at 10 miles per hour!  Woo-hoo, we were flyin’!

This is what the day was like…

Since we were up before the workingmen, the water was serene…

…but not for long…

…maneuvering became interesting…

…yes, that pink wall over Boyd’s right shoulder is a barge…

…we even got to see one of those famous riverboat ‘paddlewheelers’…

…but the day was glorious, start to finish…

Bushranger is currently sitting at the East Port Marina and I am clutching my camera.  I’m waiting for the famous jumping Asian Carp.  Loopers have reported that these silly fly have jumped right into their boats as they transit this part of the river.

When we pulled into tonight’s slip, the crazy fish were jumping all over the place.  They didn’t land in Bushranger, but at one point Boyd did exclaim that he was being attacked by suicidal fish!  Of course, I was a bit busy handling the lines to capture this for posterity. So, now that I have camera in hand, they have turned shy…awwwww…

Great shot of the Paddle Steamer – a vision of a bygone era of the Illonois River, and more akin to the Mississippi River in my mind – thanks to Hollywood movies.

We passed a what looked like a repair station for paddle steamers but I was too slow on the camera to catch its likeness for the blog. ..darn!
