Ottawa Illinois

31 Jul

Oh, it was heaven!  This morning the sun rose, and we DIDN’T!  Nope, we slept in.

Why, you ask?!? Well, first, we had nowhere that we had to go, second, this is a beautiful place, third, there’s so much to see, and fourth (and most important) we had a bucket full of grocery shopping and 5 loads of laundry to do. (heavy sigh)

But it was easy! — because of this lovely marina.  Not only are the facilities clean and new, but they have a ‘loner car’.

For all you non-Loopers out there, you need to know that there are actually marinas scattered throughout the Loop that keep one or two clunker-type cars available for transient boaters (like Loopers!). True, the cars are often a bit grubby looking… and may make odd sounds as they go up or down hills… and you should expect that the dashboard will have all kinds of warning/caution lights illuminated  (who REALLY needs ABS brakes anyway?!?).  But the car will get you from point A to B, so, when the marina hands you the keys, off you go!

…and off we went! – to downtown Ottawa.  Those Ottawa-ians (is that what they call themselves?) love painting murals on the sides of their buildings…

Did you know that the famous Lincoln/Douglas debates happened in Ottawa in 1858? Take a look…

…I love the little side story…

(I see London, I see France, I see Lincoln’s underpants!)

Anyway, we checked out Ottawa and even got around to doing the laundry and the shopping.  A very successful day in my book!

The detail in the murals is exquisite, and I do remember that crazy rhyme. I think we might have jump roped to that rhyme.
