Top of the Loop

1 Jul

Bushranger is sitting at top of the Loop. From here we start the next bit of the journey, which is, obviously, SOUTH…but I’m getting ahead of myself…

When we awoke this morning, the weather gods were dripping on us again…but they weren’t really serious about it. In fact, by noon the weather was glorious, so off we went…

1smooth sailing

The cruise really was uneventful for the first few hours. I got to do a bit of baking (some rosemary-olive bread just ‘cause I felt like it – isn’t it nice to essentially carry your kitchen in your luggage as you travel the world) while Boyd got to drive. But, then it got very cool…

2canada coast guard

Boyd mentioned that there was a large vessel ahead of us. In fact, it looked like some sort of police or Coast Guard. Suddenly the radio crackled and there was a smaller vessel paralleling Bushranger. They signaled for us to slow down a bit and over they came.

This was our first experience with security vessels – and it was actually enjoyable. The two gents, both in black helmets and black life jackets, came along side and quizzed us, politely, about our trip into Canada. Of course, my captain had all the proper clearances (which we relayed to the gents) so I invited them in for a cup of coffee (I bet Bushranger’s coffee is a lot better than what they could get on their ‘mother ship’). They both declined the offer and, with a cheery ‘good bye’, veered off to track down some other ne’er do wells.

(I’m sure we looked so suspicious, travelling at a crisp 8 miles an hour, in a 35-year-old trawler, flying a Looper flag, while baking rosemary-olive bread)

So, that was our exciting afternoon, but we’re expecting a bit more this evening.

Bushranger is currently serenely docked at the Blind River Marina and has a perfect view of Blind River’s big Canada Day Celebration!

4canada day

I’m really looking forward to dusk/nightfall since we’ll have front row seats for the fireworks!!!!!
