Bobcaygeon

19 Jun

We kept hearing about how amazing the Trent-Severn is; how beautiful the countryside and how quaint the towns (especially Bobcaygeon).  We elected to stay at the Gordon Yacht Harbour Marina in Bobcaygeon since we expected the lock walls (where we normally tie up) would be teeming with boats.  Also, we needed to do a bit of laundry and the marina advertised having laundry facilities.

I’m guessing that if you’re reading this you must have some small interest in my opinion, so I’m going to give it to you.

Regarding the countryside, oh, yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as beautiful as Hell’s Gate (the waterway from Young’s Point to Bobcaygeon). It is dramatic, and lush, and words fall far short of doing it justice.

Regarding the town of Bobcaygeon, it IS a cute little place…

(and it DOES have a truly wonderful shoe store)

Regarding the marina, it has potential but doesn’t quite reach the mark. The WiFi is not working, the laundry is inop, one of the toilets is out-of-order, the electrical power is dodgy (has a reverse polarity problem), the boat slips are a bit narrow, and the facility looks like it is half-finished. Please don’t get me wrong, the folks are lovely and kind, but some of them don’t seem to be that knowledgeable (or maybe keen?). The owner of the marina stopped by. He was very friendly and we mentioned that the WiFi/laundry/toilet/electrics were not working and he appeared surprised but not concerned. All well…

So, tomorrow we leave for ports unknown (assuming the weather gods are agreeable) and I will recall with a smile the beautiful countryside, and outstanding shoe-shopping of Bobcaygeon…

I must have been on too many runs ashore waiting for the Tiger Bar’s door to unlatch, but that shot of the shoe store left me with an impression of a cashed up raider trying to be unobtrusive by loitering in the bushes……just waiting for the innocents to open the door.
