The Flavor of the Military

You may have noticed that Bushranger has been visiting quite a few military marinas. That’s not by accident…both Boyd and I feel a sense of ‘homecoming’ each time we wander onto a base. We both know and appreciate the clean hierarchy, the assumed security, and the respect that seems to be a given at these marinas. You could say that here, we feel like ‘family’.

That being said, it is amazing the wide varieties of ‘flavors’ that we have discovered at these military marinas.

The first military marina we visited was Navy Pensacola, on the Florida panhandle. There, everything was clean, basic and utilitarian—lots of concrete and no muss, no fuss.

The next one was at Patrick AFB, also in Florida. Maybe it is the difference between how the Navy and the Air Force see the world, but Patrick was ‘party city’. The bar was huge, the beer was cheap, we were docked right next to a tiki bar, and, as the manatees cavorted next to the boats, there were parties and get-togethers every night.

From there we wandered up to Virginia, and stayed at Navy Norfolk.

The marina was filled with young, proficient and cheerful staff, just eager to catch lines, pump fuel or (believe it or not) empty holding tanks.

Now, we’re happily docked at Navy Pax River – and a more laid-back place would be difficult to find. As we gently bob to the rhythm of the river, we are surrounded by greenery, and there is no one around but us.

I always sleep well at these marinas. I guess I like the variety and the security…

Be sure and jump across the Pax River and visit our adopted homeport of Solomons, MD. Spring Cove Marina is super hospitable and family run. Zahnizers is also 5-star and has a very good restaurant in Dry Dock.

Nope, there’s a canal through to the Delaware Bay.

How do you figure out what military marinas you can stay at??

If you’re active or retired military then you’re authorized. You call ahead and make sure they have room
