Belhaven, North Carolina

Bushranger is safely docked at the River Forest Marina in Belhaven, North Carolina.

It’s an amazing little marina. It was purchased last year by a group of local friends who have ‘a cunning plan’! …and it really IS a cunning plan. They started by rebuilding the marina from inside to out – new bathrooms with showers (hot, hot, hot water with pressured to melt the hardest heart!), golf carts (for transients to visit all the local hot spots, including Foodlion and ACE Hardware), and a laundryroom that is unbelievable! Forgive me for gushing but this laundryroom has THE BEST machines I have ever seen (commercial, pristine, brand new and FREE!).

They are also expanding the marina’s dockage (they completed a lovely new dock just last Friday) and are in the process of renovating an old southern mansion that sits on the marina’s property. They plan on turning it into a ‘function center’. It’s absolutely gorgeous!

Now on to the best part; Boyd and I went exploring and really loved this town – it is filled with well-loved old homes surrounded by big trees and lots of locals who all wave at passing strangers (even those that are casually attired and riding in a golf cart). We ended up at a restaurant named Spoon River.

WHAT A FIND! The menu was very up-market (we were told that the chef was from Washington DC), the sauces were ‘to die for’, the service was efficient and friendly, and the manager/owner (Teresa) was a joy!

They also carried various pickles and jams (which, of course, we just HAD to purchase) and a wine room that patrons can peruse at their leisure. Boyd even found a craft beer to help wash down his softshell crab dinner.
…can you believe that presentation!

We created a wonderful memory today – thank you Belhaven.
