Georgetown, South Carolina

28 Jun

Bushranger has made it through the mud-flats and emerged in an historic spot – Georgetown, South Carolina. This town says it might be the site of the first European settlement in North America in the year 1526 – although, I believe a few other North American towns may want to discuss that claim. Either way, it is lovely, quaint, and peaceful. Have a look…

…and the Bushranger crew has also learned a new term – ‘pluff mud’…

…okay, now get this – they say that around this part of the river there is a layer of mud that is not realllllly solid. In fact, they folks around here claim that this ‘pluff mud’ is mud that has been ‘fluffed’ through the water, making it look solid, but will part like water and pull you under if you step in it (not like quicksand, they say, although the sucking sound they make when describing it sounds a lot like quicksand to me). They also say that a boat’s depth sounder will show this ‘pluff’ as the river bottom, when in actuality, there is plenty of ‘room’ for the boat to pass safely by. Their point was that we should not worry if our depth sounder tells us it’s too shallow to pass (we need 4 feet of water to wander safely through these rivers) since our hull will plow right through that ‘pluff’! …. and if you think that we’re going to go motoring blithely through ‘pluff’ with our depth alarm sounding, you don’t know the crew of Bushranger as well as you think….

You’re about to enter one of the prettiest (to me, anyway) sections of the AICW–the upper Waccamaw River cypress swamps. And you’ll get a brief respite from open waters and salt. Be sure and stop at Osprey Marina on the outskirts of Myrtle Beach. Low, low prices on dockage and fuel, and very restful.

We are in Cheboygan, Michigan. Lake Huron has been just splendid. Off to Mackinaw City tomorrow. Will take some time up here at the northernmost part of the Loop before heading down into Lake Michigan.
