Gulfport, Florida

Alex took this picture as we were approaching the marina.

Today turned into a race.  It didn’t start out that way: when we left Dunedin, the weather-gurus were saying it should be fine.  A few hours later, as we were entering the channel to the marina, the winds got serious.  Once Bushranger was docked (with the help of both old and new friends), the alert was sounded and we were told (via radio) to find shelter — tornado warning!

…yep, the clouds were black and boiling…

So, Boyd and I secured Bushranger, made our way to the marina office, and had a lovely chat with John (one of the marina workers), while the skies opened up and Mother Nature cleaned all the salt off Bushranger’s decks (thanks Mom-Nature!).

That taken care of, the skies turned blue again, and Boyd and I proceeded on with our plans — dinner with two lovely gents (Alex and Andre) whose boat used to berth next Bushranger while she was living in Iuka. Alex and Andre were departing the next morning to continue their own loop experience; they were rejoining their gorgeous Nordic Tug, Alison Leigh, up in the DC area, where she had weathered the winter cold wearing a coat of shrink-wrap (cool, hey!).

The evening was filled with.a tour of St Pete (what a BEAUTIFUL city!), a chance to meet some new friends, a bit of Mexican food, a couple of beers, and great company…it doesn’t get any better, does it?

So you’ve crossed the Gulf of Mexico now and back in the Mississippi River? Or is St. Pete in Florida and on the coast? Just looking at the thin blue lines on your “Loop map!” 🙂 xx

Hi Barbie. We’re on the west coast of Florida. Take a look at the Spot Map (it says Bushranger Map on the right side of our blog page), it actively plots us on a map every 10 minutes!

    LA and Boyd,

It was great to catch up with you two, also. Anyone who views a downpour associated with a nearby tornado as a good boat-washing experience certainly has the right Looper attitude!

Safe travels around Florida and then up the AICW.
    Alex and Andre.

Bushranger is now bright and shiny. ..what else could I think? 😉 Have a great trip and I hope to see you around the loop!
