BE Day!

2 Nov

Today was a BIG day! We have declared today to be BE DAY. Now, you have your choice, “BE” could stand for:

  1. “Big Event” (for it WAS a big event today)
  2. “Boyd’s End-of-Rope” (given the fact that Boyd is truly getting close to…)
  3. “But Enough” (what I am tempted to say when Murphy throws another curve at us)
  4. “Butte End” (the part of the anatomy that my caulking and varnishing sometimes resembles)

But, no; “BE” actually stands for “Bushranger Engine”!  YES, we now have an engine in Bushranger! And what a process:

So, how do you move an engine into a boat? First you get a really big forklift…

…then you walk that engine, with the use of that huge forklift, over to the boat…

…it’s a tight fit through that door…

…Terry (our expert boat mechanic) winches the engine down into Boyd’s waiting arms (figuratively speaking)…

….oh, mannn! that’s a really tight fit down into the engine room….

….gently place the engine on the rails. Terry was really impressed with how quickly the engine slipped into place!….

….just slip that baby onto the shaft….

And THAT’S how you put an engine in a boat!

So, it’s in! And, on top of that accomplishment, we have also hooked up a bit of electricity to Bushranger (definitely required, since we plan on giving Bushranger her ‘splash day’ (translated, the day we put her back in the water) next week, and we will need power for the bilge pump (she wouldn’t dare leak, would she?!?)).

…simple electrics for the bilge pump (hoping it’s not really going to be needed)….

We have also spruced her up a bit. She has been bathed…

…she’s lookin’ spiffy and clean after her bath….

…and Maria and Billy Jack have been touching up her gel coat…

…Maria’s doing a great job on the gel coat….

….see where the gel coat has been repaired…

…and we have sprung for a couple of coats of lovely black paint for Bushranger’s bottom….

…that black bottom makes her look like a ‘grown up’ boat, don’t ya think? The blue was just soooo childish!….

So, now you know what Boyd and the crew have been up to.  And, me, you ask….what have I been up to?…just varnishin’ and caulkin’ and varnishin’ and caulkin’ (to quote a wise fish named Dory “Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming”)

….more varnishing….

I remember a C-12 Instructor who once taught me how to navigate Australian Airspace. Sounded a lot like “keep varnishing and caulking.” Isn’t that a curious coincidence?

WOW, she looks great compared to when we saw her this time last year! Congratulations to both of you – your hard work will pay off! Hope you get some turkey this Thanksgiving!!

that will still be a bit of a wait, I’m afraid, Paul. We’re planning on buttoning her up for December and part of January and spending the holidays with family. So, next year some time….

Yikes! Tingles up my spine watching that engine “drop” into her new spot in Bushranger’s engine room. What a thrill! Huge congratulations to you both for making this lovely boat into a beautiful and fully functional boat. Can’t wait to see pix of her in the water next year. So sorry we didn’t get to share barley bread and tea before we left Iuka, but loved the visit we had. Hugs, Cathryn and Bob on Next To Me

Hi guys! Great to get your comment. I’ve got to say, Bushranger is starting to look pretty spiffy! Her black bottom makes her look like a ‘real boat’ (that light blue made her look like a cartoon a bit, don’t ya think?). Hope all’s going well. It was great meeting/getting to know you before you left. xo
