It’s Time to Get Back to Work!

21 Sep

It was a wonderful hiatus with Matt and Faye; lots of laughs and memories. Good friends are a true treasure – they will be missed.

…but now, on with the boat reconstruction! Let me bring you up to date:

Boyd is still in the bowels of the boat constructing the engine mounts. We’re getting closer: he has designed and cut the wooden supports. Next he will need to fiberglass the newly cut supports and install the metal rails on the fiberglass. Only then will we be ready to slip the engine into place (we’ll probably need to do a ‘dry run’ with the actual engine to make sure it all fits together properly).

Boyd is still in the engine room….the rugby headgear is to protect that lovely noggin from all the hazards of the job. If you look closely you can just make out his knee pads. Boat fixing is dangerous work!

We have also been working on the helm. Boyd (with a bit of help from Matt) secured the newly varnished teak veneer at the lower helm station, and attached the mounts for the engine instruments and radar display. All that needs to be done now is to clean up the last few bits of teak and put a couple of coats of clear varnish over the top.

Isn’t the newly varnished teak beeeeautiful!

I have also been working on the anchor platform and forward gunwale and post. The platform has been stripped, sanded and prepped and the first coat of varnish has been applied (only five more coats to go…then I get to turn the platform over and do the same to other side….).

Yep, that’s me doin’ a bit of sanding…

At least the varnishing is done on the post and forward gunwale – looks pretty good, it I do say so myself!

….and, yep, that’s me varnishing….

That’s it for now.  See you in a day or two.
