Road Trip to my Past

16 Apr

As we were driving around yesterday, Boyd turned to me and said, “Who would have ever imagined that we would be driving through Tupelo Mississippi, looking for a Dairy Queen?” For those of you not familiar with the delicacies offered to the american pallet, Dairy Queen is an ice cream chain that makes “The Blizzard” that is a mixture of soft serve ice cream and fruit/candy that is all smushed together and served with a spoon – and oh, man, is that good! We were first introduced the Dairy Queen (DQ) Blizzard when we lived in Del Rio Texas in 1999. It is now firmly established as a family tradition. But I digress…

Back to my story….

So, we’re driving through Tupelo Mississippi on the way to Columbus Mississippi.  Why Columbus, you ask? Well, Columbus is home to the 14th Flying Training Wing for the US Air Force.  It’s where, 30 years ago, I earned my pilot wings.

Columbus is lovely. The Air Force base is green and lush, with lots of trees and neat and tidy buildings. Downtown Columbus has gorgeous antebellum houses and sweet little cafes. It is even home to Tennessee William’s house, which now serves as a museum and Welcome Center.

What a lovely way to spend a day.

That brings back interesting memories. Was that the base where you learned to fly in 2 months or you were out of the program?
I remember arriving in Columbus with my northeastern bias and lack of knowledge about Mississippi. What a surprise to find a lovely city with educational and cultural institutions. Following your career path took us to so many new and interestig cities.

That was the place where I spent 6 months flying Tweets then 6 months flying T-38s. I made it through Tweets by the skin of my teeth!
